Description

Shelton speaks of his service background and experience, as well as training; his appointment as a reinforcement officer in 3 RAR; the experience and performance of the servicemen under his command; the operational environment in Korea - food; the help given to him during his settling-in period by his batman Private Charlie Anderson; clothing, weapons, illness and disease, climatic conditions; the administrative problems caused by individual leave breaks and brigade and battalion rest periods; leadership and morale within A Company; events which brought some light relief and amusement to the men; Operation Commando: the assault on Hill 317 (Maryang San); the United Nations Command (UNC) use of minefields in maintaining defensive positions; the combat-effectiveness of the Chinese infantry; the evacuation of casualties; the characteristics of the supporting UNC's units at the time; his view of taking Chinese prisoners to update allied intelligence, visits by politicians, assimilation of reinforcements, encountering civilians in combat zones; the equal opportunity among members of the armed forces.
