Description
Studio portrait of 165 Private (Pte) John Aubrey Hanchett of Pomborneit, Vic. Pte Hanchett enlisted on 14 January 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Ulysses on 8 May 1915. He served as a sergeant with the 21st Battalion before he was killed in action on 4 October 1917 at Zonnebeke, Belgium. The circumstances surrounding Pte Hanchetts death were described on his Roll of Honour circular, completed by his parents, in the following way: "He was a Bombing Officer for his regiment which had captured a pill box and the German officer who had surrendered to him, had a revolver secreted in his hand, and shot him dead as he crawled out".
