Description
Studio portrait of 866 Private (Pte) John Albert Wiltshire, 23rd Battalion, of Coldermeade, Vic, aged twenty two, who enlisted on 26 February 1915. He was wounded on 3 May 1917 shortly before being commissioned as a second lieutenant on 31 May 1917. He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) on 16 September 1919 for exceptional gallantry and devotion to duty at Ville-sur-Ancre, near Albert, on 18 May 1918 where he and two signallers established a telephone and communications in the village as the attack progressed. On 2 December 1918 he received a Bar to his MC and returned to Australia on 29 May 1919.
