Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Description
Studio portrait of 764 Private (Pte) Andrew Blanch, 24th Battalion, of Collingwood, Vic. A labourer before enlisting in March 1915, Pte Blanch left Australia as part of the original 24th Battalion in May 1915 for service in the Middle East, but was sent directly to the Western Front. He returned to Australia on 28 March 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
