Description
Studio portrait of 984 Sergeant (Sgt) Daniel O'Neill Sweeney, 21st (later 2nd Pioneer) Battalion, originally of Bridgewater-on-Loddon, England. Sgt Sweeney enlisted on 29 January 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 8 May 1915. After service at Gallipoli, Turkey, he was invalided to Egypt and over the following nine months he was hospitalised in France and England. He returned to Australia on 24 June 1916 as an invalid and was discharged medically unfit on 14 September 1916. He died on 16 July 1919 as a result of the lung disease he contracted at Gallipoli. Sgt Sweeney is buried in the Katoomba General Cemetery, New South Wales, Australia.
