Embroidered silk square: Sapper C McHugh, 9 Field Company Engineers, AIF
Embroidered silk square edged with lace. Each corner is embroidered with a floral motif and a date. The top of the square has '1914' stitched on the left in purple cotton and '1915' stitched on the right in black and red cotton. The bottom of the square has '1916' is stitched on the left in red and black and '1917' stiched on the right with purple cotton. A rising sun badge is embroidered in the centre of the square with the words 'AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH MILITARY FORCES' in a scroll below. Above the rising sun are sewn the words 'WITH BEST LOVE AND WISHES 1918'. Below the rising sun the embroidered words continue with 'TO MOTHER FROM JACK AND CHARLIE'.
Associated with 9921 Sapper Charles McHugh and his brother Jack McHugh. Charles enlisted on 20 March 1916 and served with the 9 Field Company Engineers. At some point during the war he joined with his brother, Jack, also of the AIF, and in 1918 sent this embroidery home to their mother. Charles McHugh returned to Australia on 12 June 1919.
