Description

The Ari Burnu Cemetery looking inland across the headstones to the Cross of Remembrance. The features on the skyline around the cemetery are from the left: Walker's Ridge, the prominent feature of the Sphinx with Russell's Top beyond and Plugge's Plateau behind the Cross of Remembrance. This cemetery was established during the campaign although this area was under fire from Turkish outposts. The cemetery contains the graves of 215 soldiers, including 151 Australians; among them are men of the 8th and 10th Light Horse Regiments killed in the ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915. The first boat loads of Australians landed around Ari Burnu on 25 April 1915 and the official Dawn Service was held here for many years, but due to overcrowding the Anzac Commemorative site was built on the other side of the headland at North Beach. The last Dawn Service held at the Ari Burnu Cemetery was on 25 April 1999.
