Description

Studio portrait of soldiers possibly while in training or recuperating from wounds. From left to right; an unidentified Aboriginal soldier of the 2nd Australian Division; 467 Private (Pte) Harry Avery, 45th Battalion, and unidentified British soldier. Pte Avery enlisted on the 9 September 1914. Avery was captured while serving with the 45th Battalion in France and later died of wounds at a German field hospital at Moislains, France, on 25 May 1918. The indigenous soldier was originally believed to be 6020 Pte Douglas Grant, 13th Battalion, however recent research and comparisons with known portraits of Grant indicate that this identification was incorrect.
