Description
Studio portrait of 12315 Private (Pte) James Eric Hemphill, 10th Field Ambulance Brigade, of Camberwell, Vic. Pte Hemphill enlisted on 18 September 1915 and was later promoted to Lance Corporal. He was awarded the Military Medal (MM) on 17 June 1919 for 'gallantry and devotion to duty under heavy enemy fire. He volunteered to bring in some wounded lying in shell holes in no man's land and faced heavy machine gun and artillery fire'. He returned to Australia on 19 August 1919 aboard HMAT Ajana and was discharged on 2 March 1920.
