Description
An aerial view of 1,000 pounder bombs hitting oil storage depots on the Danube River at Regensburg, Germany during a daylight raid, taken from the 218 Squadron RAF Lancaster bomber V Victor. The Lancaster was being piloted by Australian 434185 Flying Officer Robert Alfred 'Alf' Cowley, who had previously served with the 2/2 Australian Anti Tank Regiment in the Syrian campaign against the Vichy French before transferring to the RAAF in September 1942. One Lancaster was lost to anti-aircraft fire on this operation, the final raid of a ten month bombing campaign against German oil reserves.
