Description

Studio portrait of eight soldiers. 4209 Private (Pte) Frank Benson Hastings, 7th Battalion, of Korumburra, Vic, is known to be in this photograph. Second from the left in the front row is 4128 Private (Pte) Roland Edgar Adkins, 7th Battalion, of Korumburra, Vic. Second from the left in the back row is probably 3946 Pte John Slender, 5th Battalion, of Bendigo, Vic. Pte Hastings enlisted on 29 July 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Demosthenes on 29 December 1915. On 21 October 1918 he was awarded a Military Medal (MM) for actions on 12/13 June 1918 near Hazebrouck where he captured a machine gun and prisoners. He returned to Australia on 28 March 1919. Pte Adkins enlisted on 27 July 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Demosthenes on 29 December 1915. On 4 March 1917 Lance Corporal Adkins was killed in action in the Gueudecourt area of France. Pte Slender enlisted on 12 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ceramic on 23 November 1915. On 25 July 1916 he was killed in action at Pozieres in France.
