Studio portrait of Field Marshal Baron Haig of Bemersyde, KT, GCVO, GCB, KCB, KCVO, CB. The inscription reads, 'To General Sir C B B White, Australian Forces - In kindly remembrance of his friendly cooperation during the Great War in France, Haig FM, 26 Feb, 1922'. Born in Edinburgh, Sir Douglas Haig served in India with the 7th Hussars and in the Boer War. At the outbreak of the First World War he was a Lieutenant General commanding the 1st Army Corps within the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). In December 1915 he was appointed Commander in Chief of the BEF. He is best known for his involvement in the Somme offensive, starting in July 1916, which led to extremely heavy British casualties, and the third battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). In 1918 Haig oversaw the British advances on the Western Front that led to the Allied victory in November. He was made Baron Haig of Bemersyde in 1921. After the war he was Commander in Chief of the British Home Forces, retiring in 1921.
