The inscription reads, 'To General Sir C B B White, Australian Forces - In kindly remembrance of his friendly cooperation during the Great War in France, Haig FM, 26 Feb, 1922'. Born in Edinburgh, Sir Douglas Haig served in India with the 7th Hussars and in the Boer War. In 1918 Haig oversaw the British advances on the Western Front that led to the Allied victory in November. He was made Baron Haig of Bemersyde in 1921. After the war he was Commander in Chief of the British Home Forces, retiring in 1921.
