Studio portrait of General (Gen) Sir Alexander Godley, KCMG, KCB, CB. Born in England, in 1910 Godley was sent as a temporary Major General to train a new military force in New Zealand; he was highly successful in this role, which he filled until the outbreak of the First World War. He accompanied the troops to Egypt, where he continued to train them, and then commanded them on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Promoted to Lieutenant General, he took the newly formed II Anzac Corps to France. He served for the rest of the war as commander of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. After the war he served as Commander in Chief of the British Army of the Rhine from 1922-1924; he was Governor and Commander in Chief of Gibraltar from 1928 to 1933. The inscription on the portrait reads, 'To General Sir Brudenell White, In particular remembrance of Gallipoli - Dec 1915'.
