Description

Outdoor group portrait of 11 British and Boer officers and others who attended a peace conference during the Boer War. The inscription reads, 'Conference held between Lord Kitchener and General Botha to try and arrange terms of peace, South Africa 1900'. The armbands worn by the British officers are most likely mourning armbands for the death of Queen Victoria, suggesting that the correct date is 1901. Identified left to right (back row): Colonel Henderson; Van Velden; Major (Maj) Watson; M Fraser; Maj Maxwell; M De Juger. Front row: De Wet; General Louis Botha; Lord Kitchener; Colonel Ian Hamilton.
