View of the Leander Class Light Cruiser, HMS Ajax, that was commissioned on 12 April 1935. On 27 October 1939, she became the flagship of Commodore Harry HArwood's South America Division and took part in the Battle of the River Plate against the German pocket ship Panzerschiffe Admiral Graf Spee. HMS Ajax was seriously damaged and suffered seven dead and wounded. After repairs, she was deployed to the eastern Mediterranean and took part in the D Day landings at Normandy on 6 June 1944. After the war, she was stationed in the Mediterranean, was decommissioned in February 1948 and broken up in 1949 at Cashmore.
