View of British York Class Heavy Cruiser, HMS Exeter. HMS Exeter was commissioned on 23 July 1931. She was badly damaged in the Battle of the River Plate against the German pocket ship Panzerschiffe Admiral Graf Spee, with all guns put out of action and suffering 61 killed and 23 wounded. She withdrew to the Falkland Islands for repairs which took until January 1940 when she was able to return to Devonport Dockyard in Plymouth for full repairs which took until 10 March 1941. She was sunk in the Wast Indies, north west of Surabaya in the Java Sea by a Japanese cruiser force on 1 March 1942.
