Studio portrait of (left to right in the front row) Lieutenant (Lt) Hunter Bolton, 8th Battalion, of Ballarat, Vic, Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Cyril McDonnell, 56th Battalion, of Ashfield, NSW, Lt Arthur James McQuiggan, Picton, NSW and (back row left) 2nd Lt William John Maxwell, 5th Battalion of Clifton Hill, Vic. 1098 Private Bolton enlisted on 13 October 1914 and embarked aboard HMAT Benalla on 19 October 1914. Pte Bolton served at Gallipoli and was appointed to the rank of Lt on 9 May 1915. He returned to Australia on 29 July 1915. 2nd Lt McDonnell served with the 20th Infantry Battalion of the AMF before his enlistment in the AIF on 1 February 1916. He embarked aboard HMAT Barambah on 23 June 1916 and returned to Australia on 18 January 1919. Lt McQuiggan served as a Captain in the Australian Military Senior Cadets before his enlistment in the AIF on 29 October 1915. He embarked aboard HMAT Euripides on 4 April 1916. On 1 August he was appointed to the rank of Captain. He returned to Australia on 14 September 1918. 2nd Lt Maxwell enlisted on 16 July 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. He returned to Australia on 5 July 1916.
