Trim that lamp
This Australian Second World War poster was produced by the Commonwealth Coal Commission to promote the sparing use and donation of coal to further promote the war effort. The poster is divided into thirds in its upper section, with a third for the title; a third depicting a caricature of a stern-faced, mean looking Admiral Tojo standing before a group of Japanese civilians with their heads bowed, accompanied by the text "Tojo's way"; and in the final third, an Australian coal worker (identifiable by his head torch) stands with a clenched fist before several other workers, with a figure in the foreground holding his hand on his chin as if deep in thought, considering the proposition of the poster. Finally, in the lower section of the poster are two coal miners depicted in black and white. The emphasis in this poster is on working together to provide enough coal for Allied victory.
