Union Jack
This Second World War poster was likely printed in Great Britain during the Second World War. The poster simply depicts the Union Jack waving in the wind before what appears to be a sunset sky. This could perhaps be a reference to the oft-quoted or paraphrased "the sun never sets on the British Empire" - an idea that dates back to a speech made by Xerxes I (518-465BC) before invading Greece, as recorded in Herodotus' Histories (430BC).
Little is known about the poster, owing to its sparsity of text, however a version of the poster with the quote "Our Empire is united against Nazi tyranny" printed in black in the lower third of the poster is known. It is possible that the Memorial's copy is an early test print of this poster or a generic poster issued for different bodies to incorporate their own statements.
