What can you do in Civvy St?
British Second World War poster poster promoting the Army Education Scheme. This scheme was largely inspired by the need for returning soldiers to attain employment en masse following the First World War.
The poster depicts an empty, athropomorphised suit with a question mark appearing in place of the head floating in the air, alluding to the unknown prospects of the soldiers' future employment. Beneath the floating suit are a series of images on a red road extending from the foreground to the background. Each of these images relate to different possible carreers for the soldiers. These images include: a brick and trowel, representing construction; a microscope and flask, representing science; and a paint brush with artists' palette representing the arts.
A scheme under a similar format still exists today to assist defence force members attain skills and experience that may be applied to other civilian careers.
