Description

During 1941, with the growing German threat to Russia, Mk II Hawker Hurricanes were sent to Russia. In total they would number 2,952 - the most numerous of all British aircraft to serve in Soviet service. These were largely put under the control of 151 Wing RAF, which was based on the Kola Peninsula in northern Russia - largely of importance during Operation Barbarossa.

In the foreground of the poster is a RAF Hurricane, appearing to be in pursuit of a German Junkers JU-87 (Stuka), which is billowing smoke. Above the RAF Hurricane, in the midground are two Russian marked Hurricanes (likely MkIIb varients), and further in the background are more RAF Hurricanes. On the left in the background are 5 more planes, likely also JU-87s judging by the presence of protruding landing gear.

This poster was one of a series in the same format that depicted different achievements, notable events, or activities of interest by the different branches of the armed forces. These posters aimed to increase home front support for the war, increase knowledge of the roles that different Allied nations were playing, and to boost morale.

At the bottom of the poster, beneath the image, is the title 'BACK THEM UP!' This series was also published under the alternate title "INTO ACTION".
