Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of William J Bennett, probably 2332 Private (Pte) William John Bennett, born in Scotland and a farm labourer from Birchip, Victoria, prior to enlistment. Pte Bennett embarked from Melbourne with the 7th Reinforcements, 8th Battalion, aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 16 July 1915. During his service Pte Bennett transferred to the 14th Battalion. He was killed in action at Albert, France on 7 August 1916. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
