Failed demonstration of an airborne lifeboat, which was dropped by a Lancaster aircraft of the Air Sea Rescue Squadron of Malta. When the attached parachute did not open properly, the boat crashed into the water and sank. The vessel pictured is one of the RAF launches in which pilots of 78 Fighter Wing RAAF went to watch the demonstration. The Wing was stationed in Malta for garrison duty.
