recto: Newsmap SouthWest Pacific Vol.3 - No.12...; verso: Map of Sumatra and the Malay States
Newsmap SouthWest Pacific Vol.3 - No.12 published 23rd March 1945. It features the headline 'Japs lose 11 Divisions in Philippines' with various scenes relating to the Allied invasion of the Philippines across the left two thirds of the poster. The right third of the poster depicts Allied infantry moving forward in the Rhineland and an image of an aircraft carrier in waters not far off the southwest coast of Japan. On the verso is printed a map of Sumatra and the Malay States.
Newsmaps were double sided posters published from 1942 by the U.S. Army's Information and Education Section. The posters were aimed at troops and detailed progress of the war, information on enemy and Allied equipment and tactics across the different theatres of the conflict. The Newsmaps followed a familiar format and by 1943 featured newspaper style layout on one side and full size maps or illustrated information on the other.
