recto: Newsmap SouthWest Pacific Vol.3 - No.14...; verso: Inside Japan
Newsmap SouthWest Pacific Vol.3 - No.14 published 6th April 1945. It features the headline 'Tenth Army Invades Okinawa, 325 Miles From Japan'. On the verso are images taken by an American tourist in Japan in 1939. Tourism in Japan up to this time was being increasingly promoted, as Japan was scheduled to host the eventually-cancelled 1940 Olympic Games. Tourism in Japan was still promoted into 1940, despite the outbreak of war, however many complained at the sheer volume of questions they were asked when the entered the country. The 17 images in the poster do not highlight Japan in a good light, instead presenting them as a backward nation that are now within the bombing range of American aircraft.
Newsmaps were double sided posters published from 1942 by the U.S. Army's Information and Education Section. The posters were aimed at troops and detailed progress of the war, information on enemy and Allied equipment and tactics across the different theatres of the conflict. The Newsmaps followed a familiar format and by 1943 featured newspaper style layout on one side and full size maps or illustrated information on the other.
