Description

Letters written to family members by two brothers, WX6283 Corporal Raymond George Gaby and WX6270 Private Harold Atholston Gaby relating to their Second World War service in 2/28 Battalion in North Africa and subsequently as prisoners of war of the Italians and, later, the Germans. Pte Harold Atholston Gaby was captured at Tobruk in August 1941, Cpl Raymond George Gaby was captured at Ruin Ridge 27 July 1942. The correspondence reveals that both served in the same camps until Pte Harold Atholston Gaby was moved to Upper Silesia to work as a labourer in the coal mines until his death on 4 June 1944. Cpl Raymond George Gaby remained at Camp 344 Lamsdorf until February 1945, took part in the enforced march westwards of POWs, and was repatriated to England in May 1945. Also included is a small collection of newspaper cuttings and a typescript memoir of the brothers' wartime experinces, written by Enid Russell in 1998 and titled 'With Duty Nobly Done.'
