Studio portrait of 6131 Private (Pte) James Mason Peggs, 28th Battalion, of Cranbrook, WA. He was killed in action on 4 October 1917 whilst working as a stretcher bearer in Belgium, aged 28 years.Originally from England, he emigrated to Australia from England in 1911 and was a farmer at the time of his enlistment on 7 July 1916. His brother Robert also served in the AIF; he was wounded, lying in the mud for 24 hours before he was brought in, spending the next two years in hospital.
