Informal portrait of NX52530 Staff Sergeant (SSgt) Samuel Edward Cameron, 2/19th Battalion, of Queanbeyan, NSW. SSgt Cameron enlisted on 3 July 1940 and served in Malaya. He was captured by the Japanese and taken prisoner of war (POW), sent to work on the Burma-Thailand Railway. Whilst interned he was unofficially promoted to Warrant Officer. SSgt Cameron returned to Australia but died after repatriation on 21 October 1945 as a result of illness contracted whilst a POW.
