Description

An Australian sentry on guard by one of Darwin's palm trees. Before the war a remote outpost of Australia's far north, Darwin has become a base of great strategic importance in the scheme of Pacific defence. Strengthening of land, sea and air defences, huge troop concentrations in northern defence areas, an Army constructed road meaning modern communications with Australia's great cities are among the preparations that have been made to offer powerful resistance to any Japanese invasion attempt.
