Description

Studio portrait of NX441 Colonel (Col) William Elphinstone Kay DSO VD, 2/5 Australian General Hospital (5AGH), of Glen Innes, NSW. Prior to his enlistment in the First AIF on 20 August 1914, Col Kay served with the 7th Australian Army Medical Corps as a Captain, in the Citizens Military Forces. He embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Euripides on 20 October 1914 as a member of the 1st Field Ambulance, Army Medical Corps. Whilst serving with the 2nd Field Ambulance he was awarded the DSO for marked ability, zeal and devotion to duty during the period 22 September 1917 to 24 February 1918. Col Kay was in charge of the Advanced Dressing Station at Ypres during this time. Whilst serving with the 2/5 Australian General Hospital (5AGH) he died of wounds on 26 April 1941, aged 53 years, in the Middle East.
