Informal portrait of NX441 (Col) Colonel William Elphinstone Kay DSO VD, standing alongside NFX12617 Matron (Lieutenant Colonel) Kathleen Annie Louise Best (Royal Red Cross 1st Class), both of the 2/5 Australian General Hospital (5AGH). Col Kay of Glen Innes NSW, died of wounds 26 April 1941, aged 53 years in the Middle East and is buried in Kyfissa Cemetery, Greece. Col Kay, 2nd Field Ambulance was awarded his DSO in the First World War for marked ability, zeal and devotion to duty during the period 22nd September 1917 to 24th February 1918. Col Kay was in charge of the Advanced Dressing Station at Ypres during this time of the award. Matron Best was the Sub-Matron of the Masonic Hospital in Ashfield, NSW and embarked for service overseas in October 1940. She saw service in the Greek Campaign, and with 40 other members of the hospital staff, remained after the evacuation to care for the wounded men who could not be got away.
