Steeden all weather synthetic Rugby League football : HMAS Kanimbla
White Steeden all-weather synthetic Rugby League football with 'Kellogg's NUTRI-GRAIN' and 'STEEDEN' markings. The National Rugby League (NRL) logo is also present. Marked in indelible pen 'HMAS KANIMBLA'. The 'Steeden International NRL Nutri-Grain' ball is the official match ball of the National Rugby League competition (as at season 2002). Constructed from four pieces of non slip synthetic rubber-like material with a 'pimpled' finish for extra grip. Ball has a single valve hole for inflation.
This football is one of two presented by the National Rugby League to the ship's company of HMAS KANIMBLA prior to her departure from Sydney in October 2001 on deployment to the Persian Gulf. During the five and a half month deployment, the balls were used in games of football on the ship's flightdeck, helping to maintain morale and fitness among the crew. The KANIMBLA was engaged in Maritime Interception Operations in the Gulf, enforcing United Nations sanctions against Iraq. The crew boarded some 50 vessels during the deployment, 23 of which were found to be involved in smuggling. Following KANIMBLA's return to Australia, one ball was presented to the Australian War Memorial during the NRL game between the St George / Illawarra Dragons and the Sydney City Roosters on 25 April 2002.
