Groups of Victorian Volunteer Cavalry and some of the Royal Victorian Volunteer Artillery ...
Description
Groups of Victorian Volunteer Cavalry and some of the Royal Victorian Volunteer Artillery limbered up for parade in front of their lines at the annual Easter encampment which from 1964 to 1867 and again in the 1870s was held in the valley of Jacksons Creek near Sunbury, Victoria. The main event of the six day spectacle was the giant mock battle held on Easter Monday in which the volunteers would divide into two forces (one attacking and one defending) and treat the thousands of civilian spectators to demonstrations of massed infantry attacks, cavalry charges and artillery duels. During other periods the crowds were able to wander the tent lines, taking in all aspects of 19th century military life.
