Bushie: the celebrated Australian war dog No. 159
Description
Coloured postcard of "Bushie", the first dog officially sent to the South African War. According to the typed caption accompanying the item in its archival housing, this postcard is a photograph made from an original painting by Wollaston J. Thomas, painted prior to Bushie embarking for South Africa. Bushie was presented to the Australian contingent by the Animals' Protection Society of NSW and was named by Lieutenant Governor, Sir Frederick Darley. Following the war, Bushie became a pet of the Royal Kennels at Windsor.
