Football honour cap : Cadet Officer Norman Clowes, Royal Military College, Duntroon
Royal Military College Duntroon Honour Cap. The cap is dome-shaped and peakless, and is made from dark blue velvet with a maroon outer flat tape edging, and maroon coloured cord seperating the crown into six panels. Fixed to the apex of the panels, is a silver wire button, to which is attached a silver wire tassel. The front panel of the cap features the badge of the college, the lettering 'RMC' and the date the cap was first won '1913', all embroidered in silver wire. The panel beside this bears the date '1914' in silver wire. The cap is quilt-lined with a khaki coloured silk which bears an embroidered makers label for 'DAVID JONES LTD; CAP MAKERS, SYDNEY'. Hand written in ink below this is the name 'N.CLOWES'.
Royal Military College Duntroon Honour Cap, awarded to Cadet officer Norman Clowes for his achievement as a rugby player in 1913 and 1914. Clowes enlisted on 22 June 1911, into the 4th Class of the military college. On 1 February 1914 he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. On 14 August he and other cadets underwent a Special Graduation for service in the Expeditionary Force, and saw service in Egypt, Gallipoli, France and Belgium. Following the war he graduated from the Staff College at Camberley in 1920, and served on exchange duty with the Indian Army between 1922-1930. He transfered to the British Army in 1931, and commanded the 1st Battalion of the Manchester Regiment. Between 1937-1938 he saw service in the Palestine Rebellion. He was promoted to Colonel in 1939, Brigadier in 1941, temporary Major General by 1941 and retired a Major General in 1949. During his military career he was awarded the CBE, DSO, MC, and was Mentioned In Despatches 5 times.
