Major Thomas Lloyd Muggleton MBE (Rtd) as a mortar fire controller (sergeant), later Company Sergeant Major A Company 3rd Battalion The Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR), Korea 1950-1951, interviewed by Bill Fogarty. Muggleton speaks of his family, educational and working background; enlistment in the army in 1943 with recruit training at Warwick and Tenterfield, basic combat training at Canungra and training as a member of the 2/5th Australian Infantry Division Battalion in the Atherton Tablelands. His service with 2/5th Battalion in the Aitape/Wewak campaign in 1944, later in the Torricelli Mountains and the Sepik, to the end of the Second World War. Joining 67th Australian Infantry Battalion (later 3rd Battalion The Royal Australia Regiment (3 RAR)) of the 34th Brigade at Morotai for British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) duties in Japan. He talks about occupation force duties and training in Japan; being on a mortar course in Australia at the outbreak of the Korean War and being returned to 3 RAR in Japan; training in Japan for service in Korea and transit to join 27th Commonwealth Brigade on operations in Korea. His role and experiences as a mortar fire controller (MFC) with A Company 3 RAR in the mobile operations of 1950; his general impressions of the Chinese, British and American units; the withdrawal back to Uijongbu with some rest through Christmas 1950; the resupply of ammunitions and rations and the provision of water in forward positions. Cold weather clothing and bedding with effects on health; clothing, equipment and weapons used by 3 RAR. The lead up to the Battle of Kapyong and various aspects of the Battle; the problems of sparing soldiers due for rest and recuperation (R&R) leave at this stage. His reposting to the Reinforcement Holding Unit in Japan and his marriage; postings in Australia particularly being regimental sergeant major (RSM) at the Long Range Weapons Establishment (LWRE) at Maralinga; his service in South Vietnam as the quartermaster (captain) 5 RAR; reflections on the soldiers of 3 RAR in Korea and 5 RAR in South Vietnam; his final posting in the army at the Royal Military College (RMC) Duntroon.
