Our Daddy is fighting
Australian First World War poster promoting the sale of war bonds. It features a charming illustration of a little boy and girl dressed in white, holding hands. The boy holds a Union Jack, and the girl the Australian flag. Positioned beneath them is the text, which urges the viewer to buy War Loan Bonds.
From early 1915 Australia was asked by the British Government to start paying for her own share of the War Effort. It was decided to raise loans from the public and the Commonwealth bank of Australia was asked to manage this process on behalf of the Commonwealth Government. On 1st July 1915 the first War Loan was launched. In total seven other War Loan campaigns followed and all were oversubscribed. The last was launched on 1st August 1918 just months before the end of the war.
