Portrait of 3397 Corporal (Cpl) Herbert (Bert) Newton, 44th Battalion, and his wife Mary Magnolia Newton, of Fremantle, WA. Cpl Newton's rank was relinquished when he marched into Larkhill Camp, England, in August 1917. Private Newton was killed in action during the German offensive on the Somme at Sailly le Sec, France, on 5 April 1918 and he is memorialised at Villers Bretonneux, having no known grave.
