Avro 504 seat belt
Description
An Avro seatbelt with a wide central elasticised band (19.8cm wide by 23.5 cm long) sewn to two reinforced leather tapered ends. A system of hinged metal plates then attaches to a screw turnbuckle at each leather end to which two 46 cm lengths of narrow rope are attached. The two strands of rope are spliced together around a metal eye which then attaches to bracing plates attached to the cockpit stiffeners. The name 'Avro' is stamped on each of the leather belt ends. Two leather straps, now broken, are sewn into the top of the belt and would have secured the belt around the wearer's waist or across their shoulder. The rear face of the elastic bears evidence of an ink stamp.
