Description

Officer's khaki service dress tunic with Rising Sun collar badges and 26 Battalion colour patches on each upper arm. The tunic has shoulder straps with rank insignia for a major. There are two pleated breast pockets and two expandable pockets below the waist. Each pocket has a buttoned flap. The tunic is partially lined with an interior pocket at the left waist. Above the left breast pockets are ribbons for the Victoria Cross, with miniature device, Military Cross, 1914-15 Star, British War Medal 1914-20, Victory Medal, British War Medal 1939-45 and King George VI Coronation Medal. A maker's label is sewn inside the collar with the name 'MR E.T. Towner' typed below.

History / Summary

Associated with Major Edgar Thomas Towner. Towner was born at Glencoe Station near Blackall on the Barcoo River, Queensland on 19 April 1890. He worked on his father's property until his enlistment on 4 January 1915. Towner served as a Lieutenant with 2 Machine Gun Battalion, 2 Division and won the Victoria Cross at Mont St Quentin on 1 September 1918. He had previously won the Military Cross for his actions during fighting near Morlancourt on the night of 10-11 June 1918. After World War One Towner returned to Queensland and worked Kaloola, a grazing property near Longreach. At the outbreak of World War Two Towner was appointed as a Captain in 26 Battalion of the Citizen Military Forces. He then became second in command with the temporary rank of Major. He retired on 21 January 1942.
