The artist's first hut, Konyu River Camp; verso: Sketch of hut on printed image
Description
The artist's first bamboo and attap hut at Konyu River Camp in November 1942. When the prisoners first arrived in Thailand, they were forced to march into the jungle to reach the campsites on the railway. Often the ill and exhausted men had first to consruct the bamboo and attap huts they would live in before starting work on the railway itself. The flimsy hut was subjected to monsoon rains, mud & wind. Verso: sketch of a hut upper right; rough map upper left; printed image: small camouflaged motor car, man taking readings from theodolyte, and man taking notes.
