Camp Theatre, Chungkai
Description
In the foreground is a figure carrying water, and to the left is the Chungkai Theatre made from bamboo and attap (palm leaf). It was built in a natural amphitheatre, with a dug-out orchestra pit, and was able to seat 2,000 people on the ground. The River Kwai was to the rear of the theatre. This drawing was dated by the artist a long time after its production, and the 1943 date given is too early, as the Chungkai Theatre did not open until February 1944. There is another building depicted in the background of this piece, set amongst trees and a hilly landscape, and there are several figures in the middle ground.
