Description
Studio portrait of 4579 Private (Pte) Edward John Ryan, 14th Reinforcements, 8th Battalion, of Rosebery East, Vic. Pte Ryan enlisted on 9 July 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Themistocles in Melbourne on 28 January 1916. He was killed in action while serving with the 57th Battalion on 25 September 1917, at Polygon Wood. His younger brother 4576 Pte Joseph Ernest Ryan, who enlisted on the same day, was also killed in action on 19 July 1916.
