Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Thomas Karran Maltby, 8th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion, of Victoria. Lt Maltby previously served with the 66th Infantry Senior Cadets. He embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Makarini on 15 September 1915. On 19 May 1917 he received an accidental gun shot wound to the right arm and was admitted to hospital. Lt Maltby was promoted to captain on 9 August 1916 and returned to Australia on 28 February 1919 aboard HMAT Anchises. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
