Description

Dark blue morocco leather Royal Artillery officer's sabretache. The front flap is covered in dark blue cloth edged with gold bullion artillery pattern lace. The centre bears raised gold bullion embroidery showing the British coat of arms, embroidered over pale blue silk, above a laurel and oak leaf wreath. A Queen Victoria crown, embroidered over red silk, and a small lion, surmounts this device. There are embroidered scrolls between the coat of arms and the wreath. In the centre is the artillery motto 'UBIQUE' embroidered in gold on crimson velvet. Beneath the wreath is a gold field gun and crimson velvet scrolls embroidered in gold 'QUO.FAS.ET.GLORIA.DUCUNT'. There are three gilded brass D rings at the top of the sabretache for attachment to the waist straps. The expanding leather pocket at the back of the sabretache is lined with glazed cream cotton.

History / Summary

Although this sabretache was worn by an officer of the Royal Artillery in Great Britain, exactly the same pattern was worn as part of full dress by permanent artillery officers in the Australian colonial military forces.
