Group portrait of 424101 (later Flying Officer (FO)) Keith Robert Stewart RAAF (left); an unidentified Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Instructor (middle); and 437742 FO Roy Leslie Pegler, RAAF (right) . FO Stewart, a wireless operator/air gunner, served with 460 Squadron RAAF and as part of the crew of Lancaster NE141 took off from RAF Binbrook at 1537 hours on 21 November 1944 on operation to bomb Aschaffenburg, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and it did not return to base. Twenty three aircraft from the squadron took part in the raid and two of these including NE141 failed to return. Following post war enquiries it was established that the aircraft crashed on 21 November at Damm, a suburb of Aschaffenburg. All the crew were killed. The names of PO McMaster, FO Pettiford and FO Stewart are recorded on the Memorial to the Missing, Runnymede, Surrey, UK. Flt Sgts Herbertson, Jones and Chandler are buried at Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany.
