Description

Two signalmen of HMAS Melbourne mend their clothing at sea. 1873 Signalman Ernesto Campagnolo, born in Walhalla, Vic, (left, using a Singer sewing machine) was lost at sea on 21 December 1916 during some rough weather. The Melbourne joined the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron late in 1916 and engaged in hunting for enemy raiders and submarines, and 'dark night patrols' in search of enemy mine layers. From 1917 the light cruisers also escorted convoys of merchant ships.
