First aid burn outfit for air crew : Flying Officer R N Levy, RAAF, 180 Squadron, RAF
Rubberised khaki fabric first aid burns outfit package for use by aircrew. The package has been torn open and the contents are missing. The top right corner is split in two and each half has a metal eyelet through which a small piece of self fabric is threaded. The opening tear runs from the top right corner to towards the bottom left corner. The remaining corners have written instructions 'PULL TO OPEN'. Further instructions for opening the packet are printed in black across the top of the pack 'TO OPEN THIS PACK TEAR DIAGONALLY FROM ANY CORNER AS INDICATED BY ARROWS'. Underneath this, the pack is given a title 'FIRST AID OUTFIT FOR AIR CREWS'. The contents of the pack are listed below this along with precautionary instructions for the use of its contents. The contents originaly comprised a syringe, two ampoules of morphine, anti-burn mittens, anti-burn jelly and a large wound dressing, now package is empty. There is also a red cross symbol at the bottom of the pack. The instructions and information on the front side are repeated on the back.
Issued to 428329 Flying Officer Richard Noel Levy. Levy was born in Bendigo, Victoria, on 18 June 1924. He worked as an office boy for his family's company, Cohn Bros Victoria Brewery until his enlistment with the RAAF in October, 1942. Levy undertook operational training with the RAAF in Australia, flying Tiger Moth and British Avro Anson aircraft. He qualified as a pilot on 29 July, 1943 and was promoted to the rank of sergeant. In September 1943 along with other RAAF personnel Levy embarked on the American troopship 'Matsonia'. After a short stop in San Francisco he boarded the 'Queen Elizabeth' for the United Kingdom. Levy continued his training in the UK flying Wellington and Tiger Moth aircraft. In early 1944, he was promoted to the rank of Flight Sergeant and in August, he was commissioned as a pilot officer. Serving with 180 Squadron, RAF, Levy and his crew flew B25 Mitchell aircraft over Europe. After the cessation of hostilities, his squadron moved from Belgium into Germany and were re-equipped with Mosquito aircraft. Levy was discharged on 3 January, 1946 with the rank of Flying Officer.
