Description
Garvey's cartoon self-portrait, from a series of thirty-six pencil drawings made in Syria, Palestine and Lebanon in 1942 of members of 15 Platoon 'C' Company, 2/32 Battalion, Lebanon 1942. Garvey, with wild curly hair, is seen in right profile, wearing shorts and no shirt, his right arm leaning on a spade. Joseph Francis Garvey was born in Happy Valley, Victoria on 27 August 1912. He enlisted in Caulfield, Victoria on 1 July 1940, and was discharged on 16 November 1945. He served in the Army with the rank of Private, service number VX42005. He was in the Intelligence Section at Battalion Headquarters for the 2/32 Battalion.
