Studio portrait of 420157 Aircraftman 1 (AC1) Milford James (Mil) Cusick of Newcastle, NSW. He later served as a Pilot Officer with 460 Squadron, RAAF. PO Cusick as part of the crew of Lancaster ND 463 took off from RAF Binbrook at 1846 hours on 24 March 1944 on a bombing operation to Berlin, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and it did not return to base. Twenty four aircraft from the squadron took part in the raid, and two of these aircraft and their crews failed to return. Other crew included 420157 PO Milford James Cusick, RAAF (Pilot); 414313 Warrant Officer (WO) John Randall Martin, RAAF (Navigator); 418349 Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) John William Clifton, RAAF (Bomb Aimer); 425306 Flt Sgt Percival Allan Forrest, RAAF (Wireless Operator Air); Sgt J Foster, RAF (Flight Engineer); 434660 Flt Sgt Gerard Noel Speering, RAAF (Mid Upper Gunner); 418917 Flt Sgt Alan Bumpstead, RAAF (Rear Gunner). Post war it was established that the aircraft crashed on a hillside near the village of Hollenstein, south west of Hanover, Germany. Flt Sgt Forrest (RAAF) became a POW. The other six crew members were killed and they are interred in the Hanover War Cemetery, Germany.
